Bang up burgers with sneaky cheese centres

Revealing a melted cheese centre when bitten, this mixture will make six decent sized burgers that can be glammed up to make ‘gourmet’ burgers for the grown-ups or served with the burger basics – lettuce, sauce and a toasted bun - for kids.

Preparation Time: Cook Time:

Ingredients / serves 6

  • 500 beef mince
  • 1 cup fresh breadcrumbs
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp dried mixed herbs
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ cup tomato sauce
  • 1 tsp soy sauce
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp beef stock powder
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup grated tasty cheese
  • Buns and salad, for serving

Combine the beef mince, breadcrumbs, onion, herbs, salt, tomato sauce, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, stock powder and egg. Mix lightly, shape into six burgers.
Press a tablespoon of grated cheese together to form a disc. Place the cheese disc into the centre of each ball of mince and shape the burger around the cheese. Brush or spray the burgers lightly with oil.
Preheat the pan to moderately high. The burgers should sizzle when you add them to the pan lower the heat to moderate. Cook for 5 minutes on each side or until thoroughly cooked. Turn them once only. Serve in a bun with your favourite salad ingredients and sauce.
Burgers should not be served undercooked, rare or pink. A good guide is that when a skewer is inserted into the thickest part of the burger the juices run clear.

Essential Tips

  • To prepare the patties in advance for a picnic barbecue separate each with a piece baking paper to prevent them sticking together during travel.
